Transcription Basics
Learn transcription skills and basic transcript formatting. This course does not cover federal (AAERT) formatting requirements. Your grade in this course is weighted on the final scores you receive on the instructor-graded assignments.
The five instructor-graded assignments are at the end of this course and the instructor returns assignments the following business day. Please manage your time wisely.
The Transcription Basics course will provide an overview of fundamental skills that are necessary for creating a high-quality transcript. This course will offer skill-building exercises in research techniques, understanding accents, listening in context, using Word to your advantage, and proofreading skills.
Before taking this course, students should have a good understanding of all English, grammar, and punctuation rules. If you don't, we recommend taking our English, Grammar, and Punctuation course before taking this course.
Equipment Requirements:
- Any transcription audio player. If you do not have one, we recommend the free version of Express Scribe software.
- A foot pedal (e.g., Infinity) compatible with your audio player and transcription headphones.
- MS Word (Microsoft Word 2016, 2019, and Office 365), CAT software, or any other word processor. (We only offer support for MS Word.)
- PC-based computer with Windows 8.1 or better. (Most software companies in this industry are PC-friendly. You can use a Mac in this course, but we do not offer support for Mac-specific questions.)
